Whether you are newly diagnosed or a Parkinson's disease veteran, whether young onset or late onset, or if you are a care partner for someone with Parkinson's, you are likely to find something new and interesting in this book. Relying on stories from the author's life with Parkinson's disease, as well as from before disease onset, Rick Hermann writes outside the box, following his nose on the trail towards understanding his disease, not only the motor symptoms that affect one’s ability to move, but also the cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric impacts . Life with Parkinson's disease is rarely, if ever, written about quite in this manner, combining humility, honesty, humor, and original insights, revealing a life in progress rather than one in retreat. This modest book of essays, autobiographical sketches, and poetry is neither overly hopeful nor hopelessly pessimistic. It is merely honest. Doctors, patients, family, friends and care partners will find this a journey worth taking. Dr. James Parkinson called it the "shaking palsy" in his historic 1817 essay. Now we call it Parkinson's disease. When Rick Hermann felt the first symptoms in February 1992, he was 41. Twenty years later, he writes about his attempt to find meaning in a life shadowed by a progressive and incurable neurological illness.

No pretension, no grand conclusions, just a window into his world. The losses mount up: Hermann is no longer being able to play guitar, has an awful reaction to brain surgery, becomes afraid to travel. He figures out how to modify his bike so he can ride it, then describes what it’s like when he can’t ride any more. And so on. Devastating as this disease is, Hermann’s spirit infuses this book. In spite of prolonged periods of soul-killing depression, he writes. He observes that paradoxically, writing about Parkinson’s allowed him to escape it in some measure. I can see that. The disease is life-killing. His narrative, his “voice,” is life-affirming. There’s so much texture to his writing, so much curiosity, wry philosophy, compassion, gratitude, humor.
It seems these were written as essays, not originally intended to be a book, so there is some overlap. I didn’t mind it, though. The repetition came through like repeating refrains in music. And there’s a bonus collection of poems at the end.

Parkinson Dreams about Me My Dance with the Shaking Palsy Rick Hermann 9780985807405 Books Reviews

"Parkinson's Dreams about Me, My Dance with the Shaking Palsy" is a delight to read.

A person might come to read this book looking for information about dealing with Parkinson's- as someone with the disease or someone who has a friend with PD- but, as Rick clearly states, there are no ready made answers here. And there is no hope as well "Denial is sometimes the closest I can get to hope." What a delightful insight.

Rick takes us through some of the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of his inner world in a refreshingly honest, thoughtful and very well-written way. His style is wonderfully real "I said that I wouldn't give advice in this book. I lied. My advice is to be kinder to yourself and to other people and express gratitude daily for the gifts you've been given."

How nice to read a book written by someone who understands inside and outside what not only words but punctuation mean. This is a bonus, the prize inside is in the story Rick tells us about himself, prose and poetry alike. Enjoy.
I had just been diagnosed with Parkinson's and found this book. I feel it was very well written and informative with both wittiness and serious approach to a serious disease.
I have Parkinson's and would like to have known more about how the disease effected him and how he has handled it.
Rick Hermann's book, Parkinson's Dreams About Me....is excellent. Unique, honest, captivating.
I think everyone with PD should read it. Very brave book.
